In developing countries Microsoft is planning to provide 3 dollar windows software for students only . Microsoft is facing challenges from open source operating system like Linux and free web-based applications those offered by Google. Another competition is One Laptop Per child Project (OLPC), which aims to sell millions of its innovative units for just 100 dollars each students in developing countries .Libya, Nigeria, Egypt, Rwanda and Ethiopis have ordered millions of laptops.

Microsoft 3 dollar software package windows starter edition, Microsoft Office and Student 2007, Microsoft Math 3.0, Learning Essentials 2.0 for Microsoft office and Windows Live Mail desktop . In my economic view competition over IT sector is rising plus able to create number job oppourtunity. Such steps towards developing countries is very important to raise knowledge, qualification and employment in the country . But will it become a successful plan . How well students will be benefited , How these products will be launched in market so that it directly benefit poor students in developing countries not the commercial market. $ 3 for windows starter package is a big time special discount for students.

  1. Discounted commercial software is a threat to fair trade in the labor market. This “giveaway” and the continued discounts to the “emerging nations” in part is an effort to maintain and expand the pool of low cost offshore labor. Far from a charitable act, it is a loosely disguised marketing program to preserve Microsoft’s dominant position. It does so in a manner that discriminates against the population of developed nations and tampers with fair trade and fair competition. Where are the discounts for the poor in developed nations? They don’t exist and it’s not an oversight.

  2. thats great idea. for me as a teacher thats a magnificien steps thats should be take as important matter. why ? because today so much piracy and competition in os making, and to me if microsoft doesnt do thats, user will leave it and migrate to the others os. in other hands microsoft can increase their capabilities in selling product if they could produce this kinds windows
