Diabetes is a very common health problem, with 1 in 10 people over 50 years suffering from diabetes.
What causes diabetes?
Our body is made of the smallest units called cells.Energy derived from glucose (sugar) and insulin is needed to carry energy to cells and all body functions work using the energy derived by cells from the glucose (sugar).
Types of Diabetes
Diabetes is of 2 types. Type 1 is mostly prevalent in children or young adults. In this type of diabetes, the body’s immune system malfunctions & identifies insulin-producing cells as foreign and destroys them. This results in lower levels of insulin needed to carry energy to cells.
In type 2 diabetes, the body does not produce enough insulin needed or the liver produces more glucose than is needed by the body. So a combination of these 2 factors causes diabetes.
Diabetes can create complications if allowed to go uncontrolled. Diabetes can result in problems to eye vision, kidneys, nerves, gum and blood vessels.
But diabetes is a disease that can be easily controlled by changing dietary hanits, exercise & controlled life style.
Treating Diabetes & keeping it under control
When weight control, diet, and exercise do not work to keep diabetes under control, doctors recommend oral medication. While taking oral medications it is very important to eat sugar free healthy diet and not to gain weight.
You will find many articles on RD.com - Diabetes Friendly Foods and more information on exercise routines for keeping diabetes under control.
Monitor daily sugar levels and adjust your daily oral medication accordingly.
In extreme cases, when oral medications do not work to keep the sugar level in limits, insulin injections may be necessary.
