Green Inspirations - Green buildings catching up in the new age, Gurgaon moves to plant trees

February 1st, 2009 · No Comments

The interest for sustainable green buildings is catching up worlwide. The day is not far when the first choice for a new building will be Green Architecture. In December 2008, a green building was inaugurated in Gurgaon, confirming the millenium city status enjoyed by Gurgaon.  The building is an inspiration to everyone to adapt the green life style. Inspired, the people of  Gurgaon organized a green day on Feb 1, 2009, when thousands of people marched the roads with green plants in hand and planting them on the road banks.

The first green building in Sector 44 is an initiative by S.M Sehgal Foundation. It has been designed & constructed  following the ‘Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)’ standards set by the US Green Building Council.

The building uses 35KW solar power generation unit to meet 100% of its energy needs. It has built in rain-water-harvesting facility and is built on zero-waste concept. This building design is a major step that will depend less on energy produced by fossil fuels and thus help in reducing the carbon emissions.

A green building may cost 10% to 20% more than the conventional building, but the extra cost is recovred by way of reduced energy costs, while providing all the health & environmental benifits.

What are the basic features going into the the Green Building

* Solar power generation unit - 35 KW solar photovoltaic installation on rooftop in the Gurgaon Building

* Water harvesting mechanism

* Minimum carbon dioxide emission

* Designed to maximize sunlight for lighting

* Cost 10% to 20% more than traditional buidings to construct

* It has an indoor climate control mechanism and uses non-conventional system for cooling
